Russian art museum in St Petersburg

The museum collection contains over 400 000 exhibits covering all major periods and trends in the history of Russian art, all main types and genres, trends and schools of Russian art over more than a thousand years: from the X to the XXI century.

Today, the area of the museum complex is more than 30 hectares. The collection is accommodated in buildings that are outstanding monuments of the XVIII-XIX century architecture: Mikhailovsky, Stroganov, Marble Palaces, and Mikhailovsky Castle. Mikhailovsky Garden, Summer Garden and Peter I's Summer Palace as well as Cabin of Peter the Great are also part of the museum complex.

Russian Museum location

The main building and exposition are located in the Mikhailovsky Palace

The nearest metro station is Nevsky Prospekt: through the underground passage of Nevsky Prospekt, right along the Italyanskaya street along the Belmond Grand Hotel Europe to the Arts square (Ploshyad' iskusstv).
The main entrance to the Russian Museum is on the opposite side of the square.
Walking along Sadovaya street towards the Summer garden is about 250 meters.

The Russian Museum or the State Russian Museum is notable not only for the works of art that are located inside. Mikhailovsky Palace
The Mikhailovsky Palace is the main building of the Museum. It is located on the Arts square and represents the Empire style of Neoclassicism. Inside the Palace there are collections of works of art from the early, folk, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Saint Michael's Castle
This majestic Palace has a complex shape and resembles the buildings of medieval Europe. It was called the fortress of Emperor Paul I and a miracle of luxury and taste. Famous artists and sculptors took part in its design. The Palace was built as a ceremonial residence of the Emperor. At the same time, it was a Museum of ancient, European and Russian art.

Marble Palace
Unique architectural monument of the second half of the XVIII century. Previously, the post office was located in its place, and now the Neva embankment is decorated with this magnificent Palace.
The construction of the Palace was carried out for 17 years. The main building material of the external and internal decoration of the building was natural stone: granite and marble of different colors, which is why it got its name and unique appearance.

Stroganov Palace
A beautiful building with unusual decoration is located on Nevsky Prospekt. It got its name because of the ancient family that lived in it — the Stroganovs. The Palace was designed by one of the most famous architects of the time — Francesco Rastrelli.
